Get Your Gas Appliances and Boiler Serviced Regularly

Every year about 14 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues which have not been properly installed or maintained.

Many others also suffer ill health. When gas does not burn properly, as with other fuels such as coal, wood or oil, excess carbon monoxide is produced, which is poisonous.

ScottishPower strongly advise ALL our customers to have their gas appliances and boiler checked for safety at least every 12 months by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

If you live in tenanted accommodation, your landlord has a legal duty to carry out an annual gas safety check and maintain gas appliances and the must also provide you with a copy of the completed gas safety check certificate.

You could be entitled to a free safety check if:

  • You own and occupy your home and
    A) You are over 60 years of age, disabled or chronically sick, and
        i. Live Alone or
ii. Live with others, all of whom are over 60, under 18,        disabled or chronically sick or
    B) You live with others including at least one child who is aged under five years and
  • You receive a means tested benefit.

Solid Fuels

If you heat your home with other carbon based fuels such as as coal, wood or oil we would again recommend that you get your boiler or appliances checked regularly by a competent person.

If you have a chimney or a flue, ensure it is not blocked up and also ensure that vents are not covered. Get your chimney swept from top to bottom at least once a year by a qualified sweep. For information on competent persons' schemes, click on the following links:
