Gas Safe Register
Gas safety in Great Britain has changed. CORGI gas registration ended in Great Britain on 31 March 2009. So now if you are looking for a gas engineer to install or service your gas boiler or appliances, don’t ask for a CORGI installer, ask for a Gas Safe Register™ Engineer. By law, gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register. Before allowing an engineer to work on your gas boiler or gas appliances, always ask to see their Gas Safe Register ID card.

Get Your Gas Appliances and Boiler Serviced Regularly
Every year about 14 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues that have not been properly installed or maintained. ScottishPower strongly advise ALL our customers to have their gas appliances and boiler checked for safety at least every 12 months by a Gas Safe Register™ Engineer. You could be entitled to a free safety check if:
- You own and occupy your home and
A) You are over 60 years of age, disabled or chronically sick, and
i. Live Alone or
ii. Live with others, all of whom are over 60, under 18, disabled or chronically sick or
B) You live with others including at least one child who is aged under five years and - You receive a means tested benefit.
Landlord Gas Safety Check
If you live in tenanted accommodation, your landlord has a legal duty to carry out an annual gas safety check and maintain gas appliances and the must also provide you with a copy of the completed gas safety check certificate.

Solid Fuels
If you heat your home with other carbon based fuels such as coal, wood or oil we would again recommend that you get your boiler or appliances checked regularly by a competent person
If you have a chimney or a flue, ensure it is not blocked up and also ensure that vents are not covered.
