A Smart Meter is really just another type of meter – although it is more advanced than those currently in use. With a Smart Meter, ScottishPower will be able to tell exactly how much energy you are using without visiting your premises, meaning an end to estimated bills. But they also give you the power to manage your energy use more effectively. By providing you with detailed information on how much you spend on energy and when you spend it, you will be better able to manage your energy costs. This normally results in lower energy bills – which also has added environmental benefits.

The UK Government is keen that the rollout of smart metering begins around 2012 / 13, with an estimated completion in 2020.

Once installed, a smart meter will mean that:

• You no longer need the inconvenience of waiting in for a meter reader to ensure that you get an accurate bill
• Energy efficiency and lower bills will be easier to achieve through improved visibility of your energy use and cost
• There will be a range of new energy products which will help you manage your energy costs according to your lifestyle

ScottishPower are currently trialing smart meters in customer homes, and are fully supportive of the Governments objective to see every home installed with a new smart meter.
