Feed In Tariff

What are Feed in Tariffs?

Feed-In Tariffs (FIT) were launched on the 1st of April 2010. The scheme is an environmental programme aimed at promoting widespread uptake of a range of small-scale low carbon electricity generation technologies (e.g. solar panels; wind turbines; hydro systems and some other renewable technology types). It pays fixed tariffs for electricity generated and exported to the National Grid. This energy directly feeds into the customers regular electricity supply needs whilst the FIT scheme also pays a set amount for each unit generated.

The FIT scheme policy and tariff rates are set by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), but the scheme is administered by FIT Licensees and Ofgem.

ScottishPower is a Mandatory FIT Licensee. As a mandatory licensee we are required to offer our customers the opportunity to join the scheme, provided they are eligible.

NOTE: Due to a high volume of applications being received, it is currently taking up to 8 weeks to process FIT applications. Your application will still be eligible from the date we received it.

Am I eligible to join the scheme?

You could be eligible if you have an approved Microgeneration system installed using one of the following technology types:

  • Solar panels (PV - Photovoltaic)
  • Wind
  • Hydro
  • Anaerobic Digestion
  • CHP (Combined Heat & Power)

Your installation must have been installed by an accredited Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) installer, using MCS approved products. An MCS certificate must also have been provided following the date of commission.

If your electricity supply is not with ScottishPower, you may not be able to apply with us for the FIT scheme. Firstly, please contact your current electricity supplier to check whether or not they can offer FIT.
