Smart Metering
A Smart Meter is really just another type of meter – although it is more advanced than those used in most domestic homes today.
With a Smart Meter, ScottishPower will be able to tell exactly how much energy you are using without visiting your premises, meaning an end to estimated bills. But they also give you the power to manage your energy use more effectively. By providing you with detailed information on how much you spend on energy and when you spend it, you will be better able to manage your energy costs. And clearly, less energy used means less energy to pay for – which also has added environmental benefits.
The UK Government is keen that the rollout of smart metering begins around 2012 / 13, with an estimated completion in 2020.
Once installed, a smart meter will mean that:
- You no longer have the inconvenience of waiting in for a meter reader to ensure that you get an accurate bill
- Energy efficiency: Improved visibility of the energy you use means you can more effectively manage your costs. And the less energy you use, the less you pay for
- There will be a range of new energy products which will help you manage your energy costs according to your lifestyle
ScottishPower are currently trialling smart meters in customer homes and are fully supportive of the Government’s objective to see every home installed with a new smart meter.
