    Cancer Research UK partnership11/02/2016

In 2012, we started a 3 year relationship with Cancer Research UK with the aim of raising £5 million towards the fight against cancer. I am proud that we have actually raised over £8 million and we’re not stopping there. This is down to the tremendous efforts of our customers, employees and suppliers; through our Help Beat Cancer tariffs, our fundraising activities and our sponsorship of events like Race for Life, Stand Up To Cancer and Shine Night Walk. We also fund cutting edge cancer research activity at the Cancer Research UK Edinburgh Centre and Imperial College London.

Such was the success of the partnership, that in April 2015, we renewed our relationship with Cancer Research UK for a further 3 years and we will continue to help generate funds for the charity. But it’s not just about fundraising; we have also worked hard to raise awareness of cancer, which now sadly affects one in two people. We have highlighted to our employees and customers the importance of simple lifestyle changes that help reduce the risk of cancer. We also continue to provide health information within the dedicated Cancer Research UK area on our website. Our backing of the Scottish Government’s recent “Get Checked” campaign is just one of many initiatives.

Four years on, I am still overwhelmed by the fundraising ideas and efforts our employees bring to this partnership. They’ve really got behind Cancer Research UK weekend fundraising events such as Race for Life, Pretty Muddy and Shine Night Walk with hundreds giving up their own time to take part and raise funds. Only a few weeks back, a celebratory Burns Supper organised by our young graduate team raised £7,000 for the charity. A recent internal survey showed almost 9 out of 10 of our employees feel more positive about working for ScottishPower thanks to this partnership.

Thousands of customers have chosen our “Help Beat Cancer” energy tariffs, where up to £5 per fuel per year is donated to Cancer Research UK for every year the customer is on the tariff, until the end of the tariff term. To date over £5 million has been donated to the charity in this way. For the past 18 months, these tariffs have always been our cheapest longer term fixed price products, providing customers with the option to fix their prices over 2 to 3 years. Our current 2 year fixed product to end of January 2018 is at the time of publishing this blog, the cheapest dual fuel tariff of that duration in the market. Our Prepayment tariff option for Cancer Research UK is also our current cheapest dual fuel prepayment tariff. There have in the past, been cheaper short term products, usually 1 year without the Cancer Research UK donation option. This will also be the case going forward; with the customer having the choice to select the tariff which best suits their circumstances.

Our recent advertising campaign celebrated the success of our fundraising for Cancer Research UK and the ethos of “doing thoughtful things for others” will continue to ring true in our quest to raise awareness and more money to help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

Together we have the energy to help beat cancer sooner.
