Cheshire’s Small Business of the Year 2016

Making a big impact around the world

Congratulations to this year’s Small Business of the Year (up to 10 employees) winner – contemporary jewellery designer, Lucy Quartermaine. Based in Chester, Lucy creates stunning pieces of handmade silver jewellery that has gained her a huge fan following, from here all the way to the USA.

Where it all began

Lucy recalls being in awe of her grandmother’s skill of creating jewellery from a young age. She excelled in Art and Design during her school years, and was captivated by the processes involved and sculpture element of jewellery design whilst at college. She then gained a degree in Jewellery Design from Sheffield University and started up her own business shortly after.
For the first two years of her business venture, Lucy worked with the Princes Trust who greatly supported her. She never lost sight of her goal of establishing her own business after she became pregnant: “It was important for me to continue to stay dedicated to my dream of becoming a jewellery designer as well as working as a full time mum. I worked part time for the first 6 years of the business and now work full time, as well as having three children.”

How a splash made waves in the jewellery world

Talking about her inspiration, Lucy said: “I take my inspiration from everyday life and everyday items. It could be a water splash, or a button, a drip or a jigsaw piece. Ordinary things that I want to make extraordinary and eye-catching. It certainly seems to be working as my designs are now as popular in America as they are over here. “The Drip Collection was really a turning point for the business, which won an award for originality in design, and this really got the brand noticed.”

Why Lucy got our vote

Jo Heraghty, Senior Manager, SME Marketing at ScottishPower, said: “We’re delighted that business is booming for so many small and medium companies in and around Cheshire. And we are yet again proud to be part of an award that recognises their effort and dedication. The quality of entries was exceptional, which meant choosing a winner wasn’t easy. However, the global recognition that local silversmith Lucy Quartermaine has achieved for her unique and quirky jewellery collection really stood out for us.
“Lucy’s designs are worn by A-list British and American celebrities. They can be found on the spreads of glossy magazines too, like Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Red and Look. The quality and skill that goes into each piece is exceptional, earning her nominations for Jewellery Designer of the Year several times and helping to grow her reputation far beyond her Chester roots. Her business ambition and work ethic is an example to all small business owners.”
Following the win, Lucy said: “Wow. I’m blown away! It means a huge amount to me to be recognised for the effort I’ve put in, not just as a jewellery maker, but as a businesswoman. Hopefully by recognising and supporting the achievements of small businesses like mine, ScottishPower will encourage other small businesses to aim bigger too.”
