What is a certification date?
The certification date is set by the Government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards and is the date your meter reaches the end of its certified life. After this date, your meter can become unreliable and inaccurate.

Should I be worried?
If your meter’s certification has expired there is no need to worry, it’s not a safety issue, it just means your meter might not be precise. This means your energy bills might not be accurate, and you may be charged more.

What is a smart meter?
As traditional meters are now out of production, all meter upgrades will be smart meters. A smart meter is an advanced version of a traditional gas/electricity meter that automatically sends us readings1 either half-hourly, daily or monthly. If you prefer, you can still submit your own readings, it’s up to you. As we move towards a greener future, traditional energy meters are being phased out and smart meters are being installed in homes across Great Britain at no extra cost to customers.
