George Clarke is on a mission to find out why so many people still think greener living is out of reach

George Clarke opens challenge envelope

67%of us believe greener living is too difficult or expensive – are we wrong?

Yes that’s right, we found that 67%* of us think that greener living is too difficult or expensive – and nearly 50%* of us don’t believe it will even lower our bills.

So are we right…or are we buying into the wrong myths?

That’s exactly what George Clarke is setting out to uncover with ScottishPower’s Great Green Challenge.

So… what actually is the Great Green Challenge?

ScottishPower’s Great Green Challenge will be tackled by TV presenter and architect, George Clarke, as part of his role as ScottishPower’s Greener Living Ambassador.

It’s his first mission. And he’s not starting small.

This is a year-long challenge designed to cut through the confusion, bust the myths, and show what greener choices look like in real homes, not picture perfect ones.

George will be getting stuck in with households and communities all across the nation, meeting people with busy lives, different types of homes and different attitudes to greener living.

He’ll explore:

  • what’s genuinely worth your time and money with greener living

  • what’s over-hyped (and what isn’t)

  • how small, everyday changes can make homes greener, simpler to run and more affordable

This isn’t about telling anyone what they should do - it’s to help them feel confident choosing what’s right for their home, lifestyle and budget.

Not doing anything “green” right now? No problem! This is where the challenge starts.

If greener living feels like something for other people - the ones with more time, money or patience - you’re definitely not alone.

The Great Green Challenge starts exactly where most of us are. Stuck in the middle of busy, everyday life, trying to juggle it all while keeping bills under control.

With the challenge, George will explore simple, low-effort changes that fit around real routines – and show that sometimes the smartest move isn’t always buying new tech. It’s simply knowing when and how you’re using energy.

And that’s exactly what the Great Green Challenge is all about – showing how greener living can be simple, flexible and start right where you already are.

Curious about green tech…but still not convinced? You’re right to question it.

Let’s talk myths.

For some, greener living involves bigger decisions - electric vehicles, solar panels or smart home technology - and sometimes plenty of uncertainty.

Our research found that:

  • 55% of people believe electric vehicles don’t have enough range*
  • 50% think solar panels take too long to pay back*
  • 29% believe smart meters don’t really offer any benefits*

Through the Great Green Challenge, George will put these beliefs to the test - exploring what these technologies are really like in everyday life and separating fact from fiction.

Not everything will be right for everyone and that’s okay.

The focus is on helping people understand their options, so they can make informed choices when, and if, the time feels right.
