ScottishPower generates and distributes power to millions of homes across the country, and the upcoming World Cup is forecasted to bring some of the highest periods of overnight electricity demand in our history. Opening fixtures are expected to create an unprecedented overnight surge in electricity demand — during what is normally a quieter period for the network.
Up and down the country match nights at home tend to follow a similar routine: the TV goes on, the oven’s working overtime to warm up your half-time snacks, and there’s usually a kettle or two involved.
It’s all part of the experience of watching football at home, especially during major tournaments. But it’s also one of the times when households across Great Britain use more electricity.
Our Power Saver World Cup Bonus Hours let ScottishPower customers focus on the football, not their bills, as they power their TVs, sound systems, kitchen appliances and maybe even their party lights for 50% less during the exciting group stage matches.
What are Power Saver Bonus Hours?
During selected matches, customers who are opted in can enjoy a 2‑hour window of half-price electricity2, timed to align with kick‑off for all of Scotland and England’s group stage matches.
What typically uses electricity during a match night?
Whether it’s a big viewing party or a casual watch with friends, match nights often mean there’s a lot more energy being used at once.
For households across the UK, a typical match night might include:
TVs or even projectors showing the match on the big screen
Ovens, hobs or air fryers for meals and snacks
Lighting across several rooms
Fridges and freezers working harder due to frequent use
Phones, tablets and speakers charging
Making the most of your Bonus Hours
If you’re watching the match anyway, our Power Saver World Cup Bonus Hours are about making these extra 2-hour windows of half-price electricity2 work for you. You don’t need to cut back. You just need to shift when you do things.
If you’re opted into our Bonus Hours, you could try cooking your midnight snacks during the match instead of before, or charging devices like phones or tablets in the background while you’re watching the match.1
The takeaway
Match nights already bring households together. World Cup Power Saver Bonus Hours help you make the most of those moments helping you save money in the background.

Electricity used will be charged at your normal unit rate, and you will later have your bill, or meter if you are a PAYG customer, credited for the energy used during your Bonus Hours. Credit is calculated using a 50% discount (excluding VAT) and appears as ‘Power Saver Credit’ on your bill or statement. The VAT is calculated on your original electricity charges before the credit is applied, meaning the VAT amount will not reduce in line with the credit. Your daily standing charge will be charged at your normal rate. Eligibility criteria, exclusions, and T&Cs apply. For each hour there is an electricity consumption limit of 2kWh, meaning you’ll receive credit for any electricity used up to this limit. Any electricity consumption that goes over this limit will be charged at your usual agreed electricity rate.
