Electric and gas meter safety

Electricity and gas meters can be installed in different locations within a home. The typical locations listed below highlight where you may find them and the safety considerations to keep in mind.

Reading electricity and gas meters safely

Before attempting to read your electricity or gas meter, take a moment to assess the area and make sure it is safe to access.

1. Make sure the meter is easy to reach. If the space is tight, cluttered, dark or uneven, take extra care or ask for help.

2. If anything looks damaged, unsafe, or you smell gas, do not touch it. Call 105 for electricity emergencies or 0800 111 999 for gas.

3. Some meters may look untidy but are still safe. If you’re unsure, treat it as unsafe and get advice.

4. If the meter is high up and you would need to climb, stop and contact your supplier instead.
