Why has my Direct Debit gone up?
A change in your monthly payment can come as a surprise, especially if you feel your energy habits haven’t changed. At ScottishPower, we regularly review your Direct Debit to make sure it accurately reflects the cost of the energy you’re using. In this guide, we’ll explain why your Direct Debit may have gone up, how ScottishPower calculates payments, and what you can do to keep your bills on track.
How does a Direct Debit work?
A monthly Direct Debit spreads your estimated annual energy costs evenly across 12 monthly payments. Rather than paying more in winter when energy use is typically higher, you pay a consistent amount throughout the year, making budgeting easier.
ScottishPower calculates your monthly payment based on:
Your estimated energy use
Your current tariff and energy prices
Your account balance, including any credit or debit
Your expected energy costs over the next 12 months
The total estimated cost is then divided into equal monthly payments. If there’s a change to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit, we’ll always let you know in advance.
Common reasons your Direct Debit has increased
Your energy use has gone up
One of the most common reasons for an increase is higher energy use. If you’ve used more gas or electricity than expected, we may suggest increasing your Direct Debit so your future costs are covered and debt doesn’t build up on your account. Your gas or electricity use may increase if:
You spent more time working from home
You used heating more during colder weather
Additional people moved into your household
New appliances increased your energy consumption
Your meter readings have been estimated
If you haven’t sent us regular meter readings, your bills may be based on estimated readings. If we receive an accurate reading later that shows you’ve more energy than we originally estimated, we’ll review your Direct Debit and suggest an adjustment.
Providing regular meter readings helps ensure your payments remain as accurate as possible. With a smart meter, your readings are sent automatically1.
Energy prices have changed
If you’re on our Standard variable tariff, changes to your energy unit rates or standing charges can affect how much you’ll be expected to pay over the coming year. When prices go up, we may need to increase your Direct Debit to reflect the higher cost of supplying your energy.
With a fixed price tariff2, your unit rates and standing charges stay the same for the length of your fixed term. Find out more about the difference between Standard variable and fixed price tariffs.
You have an outstanding balance
If your account is in debit (which typically means you’ve used more energy than you’ve paid for) we may increase your monthly payments to help pay towards this balance while also covering future energy use.
This stops more debt from accumulating on your account and spreads your repayment over a manageable period.
Regular account reviews
We regularly check in with Direct Debit accounts and review payment amounts to make sure they match your actual energy use. That means if you’re using more energy than we estimated, we’ll suggest an increase, but if you’re using less energy, we’ll let you know if you can decrease your payments.
Why has my Direct Debit increased when I’m in credit?
Sometimes, we may suggest an increase to your Direct Debit even if there’s credit in your account.
A credit balance doesn’t automatically mean your payment will stay the same or go down. ScottishPower looks at your projected energy costs over the next 12 months, not just your current balance.
If we’re expecting an increase to your energy use, your Direct Debit may still need to be adjusted. For example, a credit balance built up during summer may be needed to help cover higher winter energy use later in the year.
If you believe your payment increase is incorrect, check your latest bill, review your meter readings and contact ScottishPower for further information.
How can I keep my Direct Debit accurate?
There are several simple ways to help ensure your payments reflect your actual energy use.
Submit regular meter readings
Regular meter readings give us as your energy supplier a clearer picture of your energy use so we don’t need to rely on estimates for our calculations. You can submit readings through your online account or the ScottishPower App.
Install a smart meter
Smart meters automatically send your meter readings, which makes your bills more accurate and ensures you’re only paying for the energy you’ve used. Smart meters can also help you track your energy use in pounds and pence using your In-Home Display.
Review your account regularly
It’s easy to monitor your energy use, check your bills, and manage your Direct Debit payments in your online account or the ScottishPower App.
Can I change my Direct Debit amount?
You can review or amend your payments online using our Direct Debit Manager tool.
If you have a smart meter, you’ll also be able to access My Energy Tracker in the ScottishPower App or under ‘Your energy’ in your online account, which tracks the actual cost and the estimated cost of your energy.
The actual cost shows how much the energy you’ve used has cost, using the meter readings from your latest bill.
The estimated cost shows how much energy we’re expecting you to use over the next 12 months, based on your past energy use and your tariff prices. We refresh this estimate whenever your tariff or monthly payment amount changes.
If you’re new to ScottishPower and we don’t have up-to-date meter readings covering the past 12 months, we’ll base your estimated cost on the best available information we have for you and your home, taking account of any actual meter readings that we do have.
What if I’m struggling to pay?
If your higher Direct Debit is causing financial difficulty, it’s important to contact us as soon as possible. Support may be available through payment plans, additional guidance, or the ScottishPower Hardship Fund.
Final thoughts
In most cases, an increase to your Direct Debit is the result of changes in energy use, account balances, meter readings or energy prices. By keeping your readings up to date and regularly checking your account, you can make sure your payments remain as accurate as possible and avoid surprises later in the year.
