What is the Radio Teleswitch Service switch-off?

The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) signal has now been switched off across the UK.  This means if you have an RTS meter, it will no longer receive the signal that controls your heating.

We’ve been contacting all our affected customers over the last two years to say the If you haven’t had your RTS meter upgraded yet, check whether your heating works now and don’t wait until the weather gets colder before booking your upgrade. Book now online to make sure your heating works when you need it. Or call 0345 270 1362 Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm or Saturdays, 10am to 2pm, or book online here.

Why is the RTS signal being switched off?

The RTS system was introduced decades ago to allow certain electricity meters to switch automatically between peak and off-peak rates. It was especially useful for customers using electric heating systems, such as storage heaters or immersion heaters, and for those on tariffs like Economy 7, Economy 10, or Total Heat Total Control.

However, the technology behind RTS has reached the end of its operational life with some of the components which support it no longer being manufactured, and the equipment can no longer be maintained.
