Energy efficiency and smart meters
How can a smart meter help with energy efficiency?
During your smart meter install appointment you may have been given some energy efficiency advice from your engineer. If you would like to see more tips and advice please visit our energy efficiency page.
The good news is smart meters can significantly enhance energy efficiency in several ways plus give you access to added benefits:
- Up to date data: Communicating smart meters can provide near real-time data on your energy use through an In-Home Display (IHD). You can decide how often you want data to be sent back to us. This allows you to see how much energy you’re using and the cost, helping you identify appliances or habits that are using more energy than you expected.
- Energy Insights: Energy Insights, available in our app, can help you understand your energy use patterns. Reviewing your Energy Insights can help you make decisions about how you use energy within your home, these could include upgrading to more efficient appliances or adjusting your heating and cooling settings.
- No more estimates: With smart meters, you get billed based on your actual energy use rather than estimates sent to us1.
- Half-Price Weekends: Become a Power Saver2and enjoy half-price electricity3every Saturday and Sunday between 11am and 4pm. Our customers who joined at the start are on track to save an average of £474in a year with some on track to save up to £3004in a year! Join over 230,000 customers already taking part! By moving some of your electricity use to these times, you’ll also be doing your bit to balance demand on the grid and make the most of renewable energy.
- Power Play Prize Draw: Boost your chances of winning £10,000 in cash in our monthly Power Play Prize Draw as we’ll reward you with two extra entries5per month if you have a smart meter. Plus, there’s 250 chances to win £50 energy credit.
- EV Saver tariff: Drive an electric car? If you have a single rate smart meter that sends half-hourly readings and pay by monthly Direct Debit, you can charge for less overnight with 100% green electricity6when you choose our EV Saver tariff9. You’ll enjoy a lower rate of 7.2p per kWh between midnight and 5am7.
- Heat Pump Saver tariff: If you have a heat pump, you can power it for less between 11am and 4pm7every day with our Heat Pump Saver tariff9. You’ll need a communicating smart meter that sends half-hourly readings and to be a direct debit customer to be eligible for this tariff.
- EV Optimise: Save up to £396 with EV Optimise smart charging8when you have a smart meter. Smart charge when it’s cheaper and greener by adding EV Optimise to any of our tariffs free of charge (excluding EV Saver, Heat Saver tariffs and Power Saver9).
