Find essential information for landlords and third parties on managing energy accounts during home moves. Learn how to notify changes, set up accounts, and handle tenant transactions smoothly.
If you’re a landlord/third party, there are two main ways that you can choose to manage the energy at your property. You (as the landlord/third party) can decide to make energy payments on behalf of the tenant (this usually means that energy costs are factored into the overall cost of rent). Alternatively, the tenant can be responsible for paying their own energy costs directly to the supplier.
If a tenant is moving into or out of a property that you own/manage, either you (as the landlord/third party) or the tenant can let us know of the change. If a new tenant is moving into the property, you can set up an account on their behalf, however, the new tenant or account holder (if this differs) needs to manage the set-up of their chosen tariff and payment plan. To ensure accurate billing, please make sure to ask tenants to take a note of the meter readings on the day that they move into or out of your property.
If the property does not have a prepayment or smart prepayment meter - which is where you use a key, card or the ScottishPower App to top up - then the quickest and easiest way to let us know of the change is online.
If the property does have a prepayment or smart prepayment meter, please visit the get in touch section of our website and select ‘Moving Home’ in the drop-down menu.
Keep in mind that you (as the landlord/third party) will be responsible for energy costs at the property during periods that it is vacant.
If you own/manage a property where the tenant is responsible for the property’s energy account, this is what you should know about what your tenants will need to do when they move in/out, in case they have any questions.
