How Pay As You Go Works
What is a top up and how do I do it?
A “top up” allows you to add credit via the app or an outlet to your prepayment meter for gas and/or electricity. This system provides flexibility and control over your energy spending, enabling you to top up as little as £1 at a time.
With a traditional Pay As You Go meter you have to top up in-person at any Post Office, Payzone, or PayPoint outlet. Whereas with a Smart Pay As You Go meter you can top up in-person or through the ScottishPower app. If you’re looking for quick answers read our Pay As You Go help guide.
How will I know when to top up?
Your In-Home Display will alert you when your meter credit falls below £1. It will make a sound and the screen will flash. Watch our meter balance video to see how to check your meter balance and the alerts.
If your credit falls below £1, your In-Home Display will indicate that you can access emergency credit. If you don’t have an IHD, your meter will display when you’re low in credit and you’ll also be able to access emergency credit through your meter.
Where can I learn more about Pay As You Go?
You can read our Customer Charter which outlines what you need to know about the payment method, using your meter, and how to troubleshoot special circumstances. It also covers faults, emergencies, and how to find additional information.
