How to avoid surprise energy bills

Unexpected energy bills can put pressure on any household budget. While changes in energy use are normal throughout the year, there are several simple steps you can take to keep your bills accurate, stay in control of your spending and avoid any unwelcome surprises when your bill arrives.

Whether you’re already a ScottishPower customer, or looking for ways to manage your energy costs, this guide explains how to stay one step ahead.

Why do surprise energy bills happen?

Unexpected bills are typically caused by a gap between estimated and actual energy use. If your energy supplier doesn’t have up-to-date meter readings, your bills may be based on estimates. When accurate readings are received later, your account can be adjusted to cover the energy you’ve actually used.

Changes in household energy use can also contribute to higher-than-expected costs. Seasonal changes in weather, increased home working, new appliances or additional household members can all increase energy use. We’ve got more information on our blog about why your Direct Debit may have gone up.

Send regular meter readings

One of the easiest ways to keep your bills accurate is to send regular meter readings in your online account or on the ScottishPower App. We’ve got instructions on how to read your gas and electricity meters in our Support Centre.

Energy suppliers use meter readings to calculate your actual energy use. Regular readings reduce reliance on estimates and help ensure that the amount you’re paying reflects the energy you’ve used.

Accurate readings also help ScottishPower review Direct Debit payments more effectively, so you’re less likely to receive a surprise bill.

Consider installing a smart meter

Smart meters are one of the most effective ways to avoid estimated bills.

A smart meter automatically sends meter readings to your energy supplier, helping ensure your bills aren’t based on estimates1. Smart meters also provide near real-time information about your energy use, helping you monitor spending more closely.

With a smart meter, you can:

  • Send meter readings automatically

  • Track energy use in pounds and pence

  • Reduce the risk of unexpected catch-up bills caused by estimated usage

  • Access Energy Insights2 to better understand where energy is being used in the home and help identify opportunities to reduce your energy use

  • Access My Energy Tracker, which tracks the actual cost and the estimated cost of your energy.

With a smart meter, you can also sign up to Power Saver3 and get 8 one-hour slots of cheaper electricity4 at selected times throughout the whole week. You could save on your electricity when it works best for you and your lifestyle, whether that’s running the washing machine or doing your meal prep for the week.

Use the ScottishPower App to monitor your energy

Keeping an eye on your energy use throughout the year can help you spot trends before they impact your bills.

With the ScottishPower App, you can:

  • Enter meter readings

  • Manage your Direct Debit payments with our Direct Debit Manager tool

  • View your bills and account information

Check your bills regularly

Many customers only look at their energy account when a bill arrives. However, reviewing your bills regularly can help you identify any unusual changes in your energy use before they become a larger issue.

When checking your bill, look for:

  • Whether the reading is actual or estimated

  • Any debit balance building on the account

  • Changes to tariffs or unit rates

The earlier you spot an issue, the easier it is to sort out.

Track your spending in real time

Smart meter customers can use their In-Home Display to see what they’re spending on energy as they use it. This visibility helps you understand how everyday activities affect your energy costs so you can make adjustments where necessary.

The display can show:

  • Current energy use

  • Energy costs in pounds and pence

  • Progress against budgets and energy-saving goals

Having easy access to this information can help you avoid surprise bills.

Look for opportunities to reduce energy use

Reducing unnecessary energy use can lower both your bills and the likelihood of unexpected costs further down the line.

Smart meters and tools like Energy Insights,2 can help you identify where energy is being used in your household and encourage more efficient habits. Even small changes can make a difference over time.

We’ve got more energy efficiency advice on our website. Examples include:

  • Turning off appliances when not in use

  • Draught-proofing doors or windows and bleeding radiators

  • Using your washing machine at a lower temperature like 30°C

What should I do if I think my bill is wrong?

If you think your bill is higher than expected:

  1. Check whether the bill is based on an estimated reading

  2. Send an up-to-date meter reading

  3. Review your recent energy use

  4. Contact ScottishPower if you still have concerns so we can investigate

Acting quickly can help resolve any issues before they affect your account balance.

Avoiding surprise energy bills comes down to staying informed.
